Start With Statistics, Not Just Tools
It’s tempting to jump straight into learning Python libraries, but the tools are only useful once you understand what you’re trying to do with data. A working grasp of probability, distributions, hypothesis testing, and correlation versus causation matters more early on than which library you use — the tools change every few years, the statistical reasoning doesn’t.
Learn Python as a Means, Not an End
You do need to be comfortable writing code — cleaning messy data, automating an analysis, building a simple model — but the goal isn’t to become a software engineer. Focus on the parts of Python that data work actually uses day to day: working with data structures, basic scripting, and the core data/ML libraries, rather than trying to master the whole language upfront.
Build a Portfolio of Real Analysis, Not Just Tutorials
Following along with a tutorial teaches you syntax. Picking a real, messy dataset and asking your own question of it — then documenting what you found and why it matters — is what actually demonstrates you can do the job. Employers and clients care more about your reasoning process than your ability to reproduce someone else’s notebook.
Expect the Career Switch to Take Real Time
Going from “new to data” to “job-ready” is a genuine undertaking, not a weekend project — treat it like learning a new discipline, because that’s what it is. Structured learning with feedback on your actual work tends to get you there faster than self-study alone, since it’s easy to not know what you don’t know.
